Applying for Licences

Apply for a learner's permit.

You must obtain a learner's permit before you can become a fully licensed driver. People aged at least 16 years are eligible to apply for a South Australian learner's permit. *Be sure to read the Drivers handbook which provides an overview of the road rules and the laws for driver’s licences.

When you obtain your learner's permit you will receive a copy of The Driving Companion which contains the logbook to record your compulsory driving hours (75 hours of supervised driving, including 15 hours night driving).

Apply for a provisional licence.


You must be at least 17 years old to apply for a South Australian provisional licence.
